SC - Initiative Defined

An initiative is essentially a proposed new law that comes not from the legislative body, but directly from the people. That initiative is placed directly on the ballot and the voters directly decide whether or not to adopt it.

It is a process for bypassing the normal representative democracy and provides for direct democracy under certain circumstances.

In order to place an initiative on the ballot you must get a certain number of signatures from registered voters. The number of signatures required is dictated by state law.
