"Investments in our transportation and infrastructure are investments in our economy, in our communities and in our quality of life."

- Bill Lipinski
U.S. Congressman from Illinois. 1937 -

Issue: New Master Transportation Plan

Starting in February 2007, Draper City hired H.W. Lochner and InterPlan Company to review and update the city's Master Transportation Plan, working with city staff.

In May, a representative group of citizens (the Citizen's Transportation Committee) was created to work with these consultants and city staff during this process. This committee met with the consultants and city staff on three occasions between May and August.

During September a presentation was made to the City Council and an Open House was held for the public to present some of the preliminary findings of this review and the recommendations for changes to the Master Transportation Plan.

The initial findings and recommendations include a number of controversial changes to the existing plan, including the expansion of 1300 East, 300 East and 13800 South to four lanes.

Over the next several months this plan will be reviewed by the Planning Commission and the City Council. There will be several opportunities for public input as the plan goes through the approval process.

As the quote from Representative Lipinski above notes, transportation is a key ingredient to a healthy economy and a healthy community. However, it is also clear that decisions concerning transportation infrastructure can have a significant impact (positive and negative) on our quality of life. Some of the findings of this latest review of the Master Transportation Plan will require us as a community to take a hard look at the balance between providing adequate transportation throughout the city (and regionally) and the impact of that infrastructure. As you consider the plan, please consider the following...
  • Why is a particular recommendation being made?
  • What are the alternatives?
  • What are the costs and impacts of the recommendations and the alternatives?
